How to create custom nameservers in cPanel/WHM

The first time you log into WHM when cpanel is installed you will have to complete a 6 step basic configuration. The only things you need to configure are the vps hostname, custom nameservers name and ip's (you can always see your allocated ip's in Hypanel).

When you are done with the initial cPanel configuration you need to configure the custom nameservers:

  • Go to "Tweak Settings" and enable "Disable whois lookups for the nameserver IP manager." (if you don't do this assignin an ip to a nameserver can take a long time).

  • Go to "Basic cPanel/WHM Setup"
  • Enter your main vps ip to "Main Shared Virtual Host IP"

  • Make sure your vps hostname is correctly configured at "Hostname" (configure a fully qualified domain name for the hostname, something like vps.yourdomain.com or server.yourdomain.com)

  • Make sure you have the correct nameservers entered at "Primary Nameserver" and "Secondary Nameserver" then push the "Assign Ip Address" button for both the nameservers.
  • Push the "Add an A entry for this nameserver" button for both the nameservers.

  • Don't forget to save the settings at the bottom of the page

You are done with the nameserver configuration, don't forget to update cpanel before adding production accounts on the vps.You can use the "Upgrade to Latest Version" button from WHM to make sure cPanel is up to date.
